“I just want to be a sheep, ba-ba-ba-baa”

I help out at Cubbies every wednesday… It’s awesome. In case you don’t know what it is, it’s youth group for three year olds, without the really gory details from the bible…

Anyway. The first thing we do when cubbies arrive is sing songs!!!

Yup.

These are nice songs. They are happy and cheerful, and there’s one that even talks about Jesus making us happy…

We’ll get into that one later.

But for now, I want to talk about this song:

“I just want to be a sheep, ba-ba-ba-baa”

Let’s give you the whole song:

1ST VERSE

“I just wanna be a sheep, ba-ba-ba-baa”

“I just wanna be a sheep, ba-ba-ba-baa”

“Cause Jesus loves the little sheep,”

“I just wanna be a sheep, ba-ba-ba-baa”

Huh. Cute little song, right? No. Not right. If Jesus loves the little sheep, that’s great, but what about all the not-so-little sheep? I don’t know about you, but when I think of “little sheep”, I thing of baby sheep. I do not consider myself a baby sheep. And I am offended. Plus, all those 3-year-olds won’t be “babies” forever. This song is teaching them that God only loves babies!

Furthermore, It is teaching young, defenseless infants that being a sheep is better than being a human. Think Michael jackson and the whole bleaching his skin white. It’s wrong.

2ND VERSE

“I don’t wanna be a bear, ROAAAAR!”

“I don’t wanna be a bear, ROAAAAR!”

“Cause bear’s don’t know how to share,”

“I don’t wanna be a bear, ROAAAAR!”

Okay. I have two problamoes with this song.

#1: They say “I don’t wanna be a bear”

HELLO! You’re singing songs FOR CUBBIE BEARS!!! YOU’RE BASICALLY TELLING THEM TO SAY THAT THEY DON’T WANT TO BE CUBBIES, THAT THEREFOR, THEY DO NOT LIKE CUBBIES, AND FURTHERMORE, THEY DO NOT WANT TO CONTINUE ATTENDING CUBBIES!

Huh. Nice vibe your giving of there.

#2: If “Bears don’t know how to share” isn’t that something you could teach them? Wouldn’t [shouldn't] a church be reaching out to the community, specifically the poor bears who don’t know how to share? Isn’t that something that church is supposed to teach you? Isn’t this telling little kids that not knowing how to share is unfixable?

3RD VERSE

“I don’t wanna be a stiiing-raaaay”

“I don’t wanna be a stiiing-raaaay”

“Cause sting-rays don’t know how to pray,”

“I don’t wanna be a stiiing-raaaay”

Ouch. This one is even worse than the last. CAN CHURCH NOT TEACH YOU TO PRAY? IS THAT NOT SOMETHING THAT CAN BE FIXED? hUMPH.

4TH VERSE

“I don’t wanna be a Iguana NOOOOOO!”

“I don’t wanna be a Iguana NOOOOOO!”

“Cause Iguanas don’t go to AWANA,”

“I don’t wanna be a Iguana NOOOOOO!”

Well, leapin’ LIZARDS! Whoever wrote this song, seriously!

If you go to AWANA, you know that it encourages participants of the program to invite their friends to attend a club meeting. Iguanas not going to AWANA is fine! We can invite them to particapate, and welcome them, too! You know there was a point at which I was not attending AWANA. After all, there’s a first to everything!

The song goes on to repeat the first verse [which we have already discussed.]

Though I guess the song was written for three-year-olds, and they do enjoy it, so

Until next time,

ToodleLoo!

  1. HA! I knew it. I HAD read your most recent post. I just forgot which one it was because I had read so many. :)
    …and ditto Madeline’s comment. Brilliant. :)

  2. This is a joke right? Please tell me this is a joke. I really hope you don’t feel this way for real…

  3. No Name Inserted

I disagree with this person’s interpretation of this song. We are ALL children in the eyes of God, whether you’re 3 or 57.
“And he said: ‚ÄúTruly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” -Matthew 18:3-4

  4. I have got one suggestion for your webpage. It looks like right now there are a couple of cascading stylesheet problems when launching a number of web pages in google chrome as well as firefox. It is working alright in internet explorer. Possibly you can double check this.
